Vaccine development

Vaccines undergo years of testing to ensure maximum efficiency and safety.

The process usually takes between 10-15 years from start to finish, and is broken up into phases including

  1. Exploratory
  2. Pre-clinical
  3. Clinical development
  4. Regulatory review and approval
  5. Manufacturing
  6. Quality control

Vaccines are tested in closely monitored trials on thousands of people before they are licensed and used regularly in a clinical setting. In the ongoing COVID-19 trials the timeline is being sped up to meet the urgent need for a vaccine, although the same process of rigorous testing is underway.

Due to a collaborative, global team of scientists and health professionals working together, alongside the development of mRNA technology over the past few decades, the COVID-19 vaccine was able to be developed and tested rapidly.
